May 22, 2012 Today Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art announced its participation in Blue Star Museums, a collaboration among the National Endowment of the Arts, Blue Star Families, the Department of Defense, and more than 1,500 museums across America to offer free admission to all active duty military personnel and their families from Memorial Day through Labor Day 2012. Leadership support has been provided by MetLife Foundation through Blue Star Families. The complete list of participating museums is available at www.arts.gov/bluestarmuseums. “Crystal Bridges opened on Veterans Day, 2011, and is dedicated to celebrating the American spirit through the works of American artists,” said Crystal Bridges’ Executive Director Don Bacigalupi. “It is fitting that admission to our permanent collection and current temporary exhibition be a part of this nationwide collaboration for the benefit of our military families. We are proud to be a Blue Star Museum.” Crystal Bridges’ participation in Blue Star Museums will include free admission to The Hudson River School: Nature and the American Vision, a temporary exhibition featuring 45 landscape paintings from the collection of the New-York Historical Society. The exhibition will be on view at Crystal Bridges through September 3. Admission to Nature and the American Vision requires timed, reserved tickets. Museums are welcome to join Blue Star Museums throughout the summer. Durand’s Kindred Spirits, Rosie the Riveter by Norman Rockwell, and Andy Warhol’s Dolly Parton, each reflecting a distinct moment in American artistic evolution. In addition to historical works, the Museum’s collection also showcases major works by modern and contemporary American artists, including Roy Lichtenstein, James Turrell, and Georgia O’Keeffe, providing visitors with a unique opportunity to experience the full scope of American art. Crystal Bridges will continue to grow its collection through the efforts of its professional staff as well as through important gifts from private collectors. The permanent collection, which is on view year-round, is further enhanced by an array of ongoing temporary exhibitions.
