Jun 17, 2015 Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art invites visitors to experience two new exhibitions in the month of July. Drawn primarily from the extensive collections of The Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh, Warhol’s Nature is on view July 4 through October 5 and explores the artist’s surprising lifelong engagement with nature as subject matter. Visitors will have the opportunity to experience well-known artworks like Warhol’s Self-Portrait, the iconic Flowers series of the 1960s, and an interactive installation of his inflatable Clouds. July 25 through October 5, the exhibition Jamie Wyeth examines the artist’s distinctive approach to realism over the course of six decades, from his precocious childhood drawings through recurring themes inspired by the people, places, and objects that populate his world. On July 24, visitors are invited to attend a Keynote Lecture with artist Jamie Wyeth and Elliot Davis, Curator of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, which organized this traveling exhibition. Friday, July 17, 7 to 9 pm Spotlight Lecture and Dance Performance » Dancing into the Future presented by Alice Bloch At the turn of the twentieth century, Isadora Duncan (1865-1927) revolutionized the art of dance as we know it. In this unique lecture and performance by St. Louis-based choreographer and renowned dance scholar Alice Bloch, you’ll learn about Duncan’s vision for modern movement that influenced some of the world’s great visual artists, including August Rodin, Henri Matisse, John Sloan, and Harriet Frishmuth. This fascinating presentation explores the roots of Duncan’s modern technique, inspired by nature and the art of classical Greece. Bloch animates this story with dance performances that exemplify Duncan’s vision of the dancer as “the highest intelligence in the freest body,” which has led to the wealth of dance styles we enjoy today—from Martha Graham, to Merce Cunningham, to Trisha Brown. Bloch interweaves performances of Duncan’s heartfelt choreography with the dramatic story of her art, her life, and the tumultuous era that formed her, linking her work to the great currents of art, philosophy, and scientific discovery that created the modern world. The evening will begin at 7:00 p.m. in the exhibition Warhol’s Nature with a performance of Duncan’s choreography “Water Study” in Warhol’s Silver Clouds installation. Afterward, follow Bloch to the Great Hall where her lecture will begin at 7:45 p.m. Free, register online or by calling Guest Services at 479.657.2335. Friday, July 31, 9 to 10:30 pm Live Arts » Film & Performance, Utopia in Four Movements Join us for this performance by filmmaker Sam Green and musician Dave Cerf, presenting Utopia in Four Movements. Throughout human history, people have had giddy dreams and fantastic notions about what the future would bring. Today the future has become more of a threat than a promise—a knot of intractable problems looming menacingly on the horizon. With a powerful sense of poetry, Utopia in Four Movements uses the collective experience of cinema to explore the battered state of the utopian impulse at the dawn of the twenty-first century. In this “live documentary,” filmmaker Sam Green cues images and narrates in person while musician Dave Cerf performs the soundtrack. Green and Cerf sift through the history of the utopian impulse with the audience and search for insights about the way to build a vision of the future based on humankind’s noblest impulses. Free, register online or by calling Guest Services at 479.657.2335.
