Jun 18, 2018 At the Museum Exhibitions At Crystal Bridges, we’re committed to exploring the unfolding story of America. Through the 2014 State of the Art: Discovering American Art Now exhibition, the museum introduced 102 artists who live and work in communities all over the U.S. We’re continuing that effort in 2018 through new installations and the upcoming exhibitions, The Beyond: Georgia O’Keeffe and Contemporary Art and Art for a New Understanding: Native Voices, 1950s to Now, both organized by Crystal Bridges. #ArtistatCB provides a window into the lives and studios of artists, who help us connect to the issues of our time in thought-provoking and inspiring ways. Louise “Ouizi” Jones Resides in: Detroit, MI Social Media: Instagram Artwork at Crystal Bridges: Picked from the Garden of Celestial Delights was created specifically for the temporary exhibition, The Beyond: Georgia’ O’Keeffe and Contemporary Art. Patterns, repetition, and beauty coalesce in the artist’s massive compositions to create works based in nature. Her floral imagery is organic and speaks to nature, but often the flowers envisioned on the walls or canvas are not based on plants found in the natural world, but rather sprout from her imagination, combining remembered pieces of different flowers into new blossoms. For certain projects, such as the work in this exhibition, Jones looks to specific botanical examples for inspiration. Knowing that this show was opening in Bentonville, Arkansas, she met with Crystal Bridges Horticulturalist Cody George to learn about native species of flowers. The final work is an amalgamation of Jones’s unique vision and the natural flora of the Ozarks, including butterfly milkweed, dogwoods, and a white-lined Sphinx moth. Meet the Artist: Jones will be back at Crystal Bridges Thursday, July 12, for Art Buzz: How It’s Made! She’ll take you behind her process of creating large scale botanical murals with a live demonstration and discussion. The Beyond: Georgia O’Keeffe and Contemporary Art is on view through September 3.
